Why the Birdfy Metal 2 Smart Feeder Is a Must-Have for Bird Lovers
Our backyard is filled with birds almost all year round. For the longest time, our fountain, located right under the window, was the primary destination for our feathered visitors. I’ve always loved watching them frolic in the water, following their routine of landing in the nearby trees before stopping by the fountain for a dip.

For a while, we tried using a standard Wyze Cam set up on the windowsill to capture the action. It was a nice idea in theory, but in practice, it was a cumbersome, manual process that we rarely ended up using since it didn’t record the bird visits.
Like many bird lovers, we’ve found that the smart feeder market has matured quickly. We’ve been using Birdfy products for a while now, and the new Birdfy Metal 2 is their most impressive iteration yet.
The Hardware Upgrade: Why 4K Matters
The most immediate upgrade with the Metal 2 is the camera. The jump to 4K resolution provides incredible clarity, allowing it to identify birds much more easily than with previous models.
Beyond the technical specs, I appreciate the design choices. The camera unit is a subtle green, which helps it blend naturally into the backyard environment rather than standing out as a piece of tech. It’s a thoughtful detail for those of us who want our smart home tech to complement our landscaping rather than compete with it.
Smart Features: Moving from Watching to Knowing
The true magic of the Birdfy ecosystem isn’t just the camera; it’s the AI bird identification. When a visitor lands on the feeder, we get a notification on our phones, and the app automatically identifies the species. It transforms birdwatching from a passive “wait and see” hobby into an active, educational experience where we actually learn about the birds visiting our home.
Installation & The Pest Control Debate
When we set up the Metal 2, we did hit a minor snag. We had hoped to use the new pole mount to attach the feeder directly to the top of our existing Birdfy Pole. It turns out the mount didn’t fit our specific pole diameter perfectly, so we had to use the standard bracket instead. The included mount probably works fine on a standard pole.
That said, even without the top-mount configuration, the Birdfy Pole itself has proven to be essential. We’ve been dealing with a clever local rat that attempts to climb the pole every single night. We monitored the situation with another camera, and are happy to report that the rat simply cannot get past the pole’s bulb design. Our squirrels may be the smarter ones, because they stopped trying weeks ago.
Final Verdict: Is It Worth the Upgrade?
The Birdfy Metal 2 feels like the most polished experience Birdfy has released to date. The combination of high-quality 4K video, consistent AI bird ID, and a sleek design makes it a great addition to our smart backyard.
